Cat O’neil shares a little about her recent trip to Hong Kong …
‘Every Chinese New year, several districts in Hong Kong host a New Year Flower Market (the largest and most popular being in Victoria Park, Causeway Bay). It’s tradition to get flowers for the family home in time for the new lunar year, with flowers such as narcissus, mini orange trees, chrysanthemums and orchids. Each flower holds its own particular reason for being lucky, though recently many ‘Western’ flowers have been making appearances too.
My mum and her brothers and sisters used to have the task of going to the flower market on New Years Eve; just after midnight the price of all the flowers would drop as the vendors would be wanting to get rid of all the flowers. She said Victoria Park on New Years Eve was the busiest crowd she had ever been in (which in Hong Kong is saying a lot!) Thankfully we decided to go several days before when it was much less crowded…’

Masako Kubo visited a primary school in Fukushima Prefecture (North East of Japan) at the weekend to do some volunteer work.
“It’s in one of the areas that was damaged by the earthquake and tsunami, and in the same prefecture where the nuclear accident occurred.
We had a lot of fun activities with kids, such as wreath making, cake decoration, science experiments, magic shows and a concert.”

The wonderful Adam Avery answers our questions..
Artist you would most like to meet?
I was lucky to meet Jonny Hannah in my final year of study. He was a great guy to talk to and I think that conversation was the point where a career in illustration clicked from being a dream to something achievable in my mind.
What film have you seen the most number times?
My favourite film would be ‘Big’ with Tom Hanks. Any Hanks film will do, really. Apart from ‘Bachelor Party’. Worst three pounds spent in a long time.
If you weren’t an illustrator what would you be?
When I was younger I did want to be a journalist but I very quickly realised I didn’t like the real world as much as my own.
If you are away from the studio travelling what are the creative essentials that you take with you?
My iPod is usually first on my list of things to pack as I find music really quite integral to my working. I’ll use certain songs and albums to help me tap into moods, themes etc.
Second on my list would be a notepad and pencil, I always tell myself I’m going to do some observational sketching but the notepad always comes home full of shopping lists and funny conversations I’ve overheard.
Third and final would be a camera for snapping inspiration.
Do you have any phobias?
No real phobias!
What is your favourite joke?
My cooking.
